Chapter 19
There is something to be said for being a detective on some tropical island, like the detective who habitually solves cases on Death in Paradise. He can go about his business, uninterrupted by anyone but a few local coppers, and has, to a large extent, the last word on law and order. Darian, on the other hand, had a boatload of superiors to consider, and never did he appreciate this fact more than he did now, after arresting Nicolle Livermore.
Heâd known heâd land himself in the center of a genuine crisis the moment word got out about this arrest, and he hadnât been mistaken. As long as he dabbled in mere killers and burglars and the occasional white collar criminal, things ticked over nicely, but as soon as he laid a hand on the wife of the future Prime Minister, all hell broke loose. Not only had he already been summoned upstairs by the commissioner, but the press had gone absolutely bonkers over the news.
Articles were popping up at a surprising speed about Nicolle Livermore being arrested and charged with kidnapping and attempted murder of the Wraith Wranglers, a fact which sparked a frenzied hullaballoo. Obviously the combination of the theft of the Pink Eulalie, the Smelt will and the connection with the Wraith Wranglers captured the imagination of the population and had Fleet Streetâs jaded newshounds foaming at the mouth.
The commissioner had told him heâd made a grave mistake. However, when heâd supplied the facts of the case had quickly backed down. It was irrefutable that Nicolle Livermore had threatened the Wraith Wranglers, had locked them up in the broom cupboard, and had made threats against their lives. Why sheâd done it was anyoneâs guess, but that she had done it was certain. He had three witnesses, and once he got a hold of Pia Livermore, perhaps even four. Nicolle, of course, denied all charges, but theyâd found the gun on her person, her fingerprints on the gun and a nice round hole in the ceiling, where the bullet had torn through on its way to the attic, where ballistics experts had dug it out of a nice Edwardian armoire.
Still, the commissioner had made it clear he wanted Nicolle released, the evidence be damned. It was obvious to anyone that the woman had simply lost it when suddenly harassed by these so-called ghost hunters. Anyone whoâd ever been visited by a door-to-door salesman or even a couple of Jehovahâs Witnesses could certainly sympathize with the poor woman. Theyâd probably imposed themselves on her to such an extent that sheâd had no other recourse but to threaten them with violence if they didnât clear off.
And Darian had just returned to his office, feeling as if heâd just been sandbagged, when he was notified the Queenâs secretary wanted a word. Mabel Swainston, when she was finally transferred, quickly made it clear her views pertaining to the case were in line with Scotland Yard brass. In short: release Nicolle Livermore at
